Who's behind Hortus Domi?
Hello, I'm Miquel. A family man, a gardener by profession and soul. In the photo, I'm joined by the loves of my life. I grew up between the sea and the mountains, and I never imagined I'd end up sowing so much life with my hands, enjoying the harvest every day with those I love most.
And this is the story of how Hortus Domi was born…
It all started when I started researching what organic food was.
My conclusions led me to believe that to achieve quality, locally sourced food, the best course of action was to get my hands dirty and grow my own food.
I started out with no idea whatsoever, but I was excited to learn. So I started what would become my first garden, on a small piece of land at my in-laws' house. But until that moment, I had no idea what I had just done… What would happen to me over time wasn't something taught in gardening books.
It was like an awakening.
Back then, I didn't yet understand what it would mean for my life. I was only clear that I wanted the best for my family and for the well-being of the environment. But it ended up being much more than that.
Little by little, my experiments turned into experience. I continued reading, testing, growing, and perfecting my work in the soil.
My failures reinforced my successes.
And once I'd been gardening for a year straight, it happened. I felt a connection as primal
I saw that with something as basic as my hands, I could create something so vital for my own body. Being in contact with nature and doing such a stimulating activity made my mind absorb new things every day. And the more I practiced, the more I wanted to keep learning.
At that moment, it clicked, I understood everything, and I felt like sharing it.
I had found my purpose:
to help families experience the same thing I did by growing their own
food.
And so I got to work.
After a family dinner conversation in 2010, I planted Hortus Domi, with the goal of giving others the support I wish I had had when I started, so that no one would get lost on the beautiful path of self-sustaining food. So I invested all my time and effort into creating a solution for those who found themselves where I had been.
A garden setup and maintenance service, to help, support, and motivate anyone who wanted to have their own edible garden at home, but didn't know how to start (or simply didn't have the time).
It's been 13 years since 2012, when I went from having no idea how to grow to:
Feeding more than 400 mouths with organic vegetables from my own garden
Transplanting 54,620 lettuces
Cultivating more than 7,500 m² of living soil
Transplanting 7,526 tomato plants
But these numbers weren't enough, nor were my hands... Many more of us needed to practice food sovereignty and experience the incomparable pleasure of returning to our roots.
So I poured all my knowledge into the online world, and Hortus Domi continued to branch out and expand, eventually cultivating a large gardening community.
Now my mission is to reach every home of families who want to adopt this healthy, natural, and sustainable lifestyle, wherever they are, whether they're adults or children.
Because together is better.
This company is not just my job; it's also the way I've found to live aligned with values and ideas to contribute to a better world.
By sharing the joy of planting as a family, we have learned incomparable values, emotions, and feelings. Few things enrich children as much as seeing their own food grow from the earth.
Today I am convinced that spreading the word of gardening is one of the best ways to help the Earth continue to be a wonderful place, full of life, balance, and good coexistence.
WHAT THOSE WHO HAVE ALREADY TRUSTED THEM SAY
"What I appreciate most is the confidence and clarity in the answers and the great empathy. It opened my mind (I was very overwhelmed by my previous experience) and has given me the strength and enthusiasm to try again. I recommend it to anyone who has a little bit of land, even if it's just a pot. Thank you so much, Miquel!"
"It's not easy to start from scratch. And don't let anyone laugh at your ignorance. Or to be helped with patience and love to begin a life as a gardener. Miquel is like that. He helps, respects you, teaches you with patience, and puts love into everything that comes with 'touching ground.' We've just started, but we know and feel like we're in good hands. Thank you, Miquel!"
"They gave me an in-person consultation with Hortus Domi, and it's the first time I've sought help growing my own food. Miquel has been my guide from the very first minute... I'm incredibly proud of the look of my garden. It's very gratifying to eat what you've planted."
"I doubted that online advice would be effective. But I was wrong. It was very enlightening. What I liked most was Miquel's approachability (even though it was online), his clear way of explaining things, and the ease with which he answered my questions. Thanks to the garden, I get exercise, I'm outdoors, and it relaxes me."
